What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It was invented in the United States during the 1960s as a backyard game for families and has since evolved into a globally recognized competitive sport.

The game is played with solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball, often on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. Its simple rules, short learning curve, and suitability for all ages have made it especially popular in schools, community centers, and sports clubs.

The Growth of Pickleball in China

Since its introduction to China in 2016, pickleball has witnessed rapid adoption, especially among fans of table tennis and badminton — sports with deep roots in Chinese culture. Cities and provinces such as Anhui, Zhejiang, Shandong, and Yunnan have seen a surge in local pickleball clubs, particularly among urban youth looking for a social and fun way to stay active.

This rising trend is also supported by government and private partnerships, school-based programs, and events like the “World Expo Bridge Cup” that make the sport more visible and accessible.
